Recent project examples

Denny has recently joined CAG from the Sustainable Development Commission (SDC), where he was leading the SDC’s local government work programme. The project examples below therefore highlight recent projects at both CAG and SDC.

Sustainable Development:

For CAG:

Leading the Sustainable Development Commission’s (SDC) assessment of the Audit Commission’s performance on sustainable development, as part of the SDC’s review of pubic service regulation.

For SDC:

Authoring the SDC’s ‘Local Decision-Making and Sustainable Development’ report, which highlighted the key findings from the SDC’s Capability for Local Sustainability project and which examined how local authorities and their local strategic partners can build capability for sustainable development, and the role that national and regional partners can play to support them.

Leading the SDC's engagement with the Audit Commission, advising the Commission on: its approach to sustainable development; the development of sustainable development training for its staff; and the incorporation of sustainable development into the new Comprehensive Area Assessment.

Working with CIPFA, IDeA and the LGA to develop an online resource for local financial decision-makers on sustainable development, Financing Local Futures.

Authoring the SDC's review of sustainable development in the English regions, ‘The Next Steps’.

Climate Change:

For CAG:

Facilitating a series of workshops as part of a project for Liverpool City Council, on behalf of ‘Liverpool First’ (the LSP), to develop a ‘climate impacts and vulnerabilities’ framework.

Carrying out research for an Adaptation Case Study Guide for local authorities and partners to support their activities for Planning to Adapt to Climate Change (National Indicator 188) on behalf of the Local and Regional Adaptation Partnership.

For SDC:

Advising the Government on the content of the Community Energy Savings Programme, the Carbon Reduction Commitment and the climate change indicators in the new local government performance framework.

Sustainable Energy:

Managing a project for the Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy, the purpose of which is to work with a range of successful, local energy practitioners to help the Ashden Awards and other key stakeholders, including the Government, understand the role that local sustainable energy solutions, combined with social change, could play in creating a low carbon future and to consider how such potential might be realised.

Contributing to a renewable energy and sustainable construction study for Cherwell District Council and West Oxfordshire District Council, exploring the opportunities for renewable, low carbon and decentralised energy and the implications for planning policy in the two districts.

Food:

For SDC:

Leading the SDC’s food work programme, highlights of which included project managing the research and stakeholder engagement for a study into the Little Red Tractor food assurance scheme, co-ordinating SDC input to the Government's Food Industry Sustainability Strategy; and advising the Government on the content and implementation of the Public Sector Food Procurement Initiative.
