Emma has over 20 year experience of working with and in communities and with stakeholders, in particular those who are seen as disenfranchised from mainstream society.  Emma’s work includes the design, delivery and evaluation of engagement processes.

For example, Emma has recently worked towards the design and development of a Statement of Community Involvement for Leeds City Council.  She led the evaluation of the British Nuclear Fuels Ltd National Stakeholder Dialogue.  Through delivering a large number of stakeholder and community engagement processes she has developed innovative responses. This has involved, for example, developing peer interview programmes and programmes employing people as local researchers.  She has also extensively trialed the field feedback programme, which uses community networks to assess the needs of local people.

Her current work includes:

  • working with WWF UK to develop a tool which uses robust methodology to measure the impact of community engagement on individual behaviour change.  This is a long term piece of work which involves many partners working on an action research programme;
  • managing the evaluation of the Community Action 2020, Every Action Counts programme, a DEFRA funded programme which seeks to bring about a step change in the Community Sector in terms of their work around sustainable development;

Emma previously worked for the non-departmental government body, the Community Development Foundation, as the Community Initiatives Officer in England.  Prior to this, Emma was the Community Development Co-ordinator for Oldham NHS Trust.  In this role she managed one of the first statuary sector Community Development programmes within Health.  Before working as the Community Development Co-ordinator in Oldham Emma worked for several years as a Community Development practitioner.  This work took place in a range of urban settings.

Emma continues to be committed to developing the skills of others and is an experienced trainer in consultation methods, community engagement techniques and community development.  She recently trained a small team of community development workers in Accrington.  The team members had no previous paid experience and were appointed as part of a local capacity building programme.  Emma is also an external assessor on the University of Manchester Community Development Degree Course.
