Power to our neighbourhoods: Towards local sustainable energy solutions. Learning from success

[Posted: 30 June 2010]

This report is the result of a year-long research project carried out by CAG Consultants on behalf of the Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy. Drawing on the experiences of Ashden Award winners and other innovative practitioners in the field of local sustainable energy, the report demonstrates how we can cut energy bills, reduce C02, create jobs and help secure our energy future by scaling up and replicating local sustainable energy programmes.

The report demonstrates that our low carbon future for the UK depends on local solutions as well as the larger scale ones. Energy saving measures, small-scale renewable energy generation and collective behaviour change, at a local, neighbourhood level, are all vital. It points to the success of area based approaches and the economies of scale that they can provide but suggests that better integration with community approaches or effective supply chains for example, could really help the work to be scaled up, making programmes increasingly sustainable and helping others to replicate your success.

The publication of this report is timely with the new coalition government promising to be the greenest ever.
