Projects | Reducing South East England’s Ecological Footprint – A Route Map
In 2007/8 CAG led the development of a ‘route map’ towards Ecological Footprint and carbon footprint reduction for the South East region, on behalf of the South East England Regional Assembly, SEEDA and WWF-UK.
CAG managed the project in partnership with the Stockholm Environment Institute, Cambridge Econometrics and the Centre for Urban Ecology at Manchester University. The study involved research with stakeholders and modelling of future Ecological Footprint and carbon footprint trajectories for the region, by sector, using the REAP and REEIO models.
The initial steps of the study involved a desk review of the scope for footprint reduction in each sector and interviews with a range of stakeholders within the region. A set of assumptions were then developed for the modelling work, to explore the potential footprint reductions achievable in each sector. Our preliminary findings from modelling work were presented to a workshop of 50-60 stakeholders, drawn from across the public and private sector in the South East. Views from the stakeholder workshop were then used to revise assumptions and finalise the modelling projections for a range of policy scenarios.
For each sector, the study identified a combination of actions for different players that would, if implemented, meet the region’s footprint reduction targets. These were presented in a series of ‘route map’ charts, pointing the way towards transformation of the region. The study is now being used by the South East England Partnership Board to inform preparation of the Single Regional Strategy.
