Sustainable design and construction
The central role of the built environment in achieving sustainable development is increasingly recognised by policy makers and
practitioners alike. In recent years, CAG have developed an impressive track record in the field of sustainable design and construction,
drawing particularly on the team’s expertise in areas such as planning, energy, climate change and stakeholder involvement. Our
approach is holistic, recognising the importance of economic, social and environmental considerations in the design and construction
process. We are fully conversant with the national policy context, including the Sustainable Communities Plan and the government’s
planning reforms, and with the tools to support sustainable design, such as BREEAM, EcoHomes and the Lifetime Homes Standard.
We offer:
- Production of guides to sustainable design and construction
- Policy advice and support to local authorities for the promotion of more sustainable design and construction
- Training for planners, developers and architects in sustainable design and construction
- Preparation of sustainability statements for developers
Some examples of our work include:
We
prepared a sustainable design and construction guide for Tameside MBC. We then assisted the Council in piloting its draft guide
prior to its adoption as a Supplementary Planning Document. This work included providing training for Tameside planners on how to respond
to Sustainability Statements submitted with major planning applications; providing training for local developers and architects on the
Sustainable Design and Construction Guide, with a particular focus on how to prepare a Sustainability Statement for submission
with major planning applications; assisting planning applicants and developers to respond to the advice in the Sustainable Design and
Construction Guide during the pilot period; and monitoring the impact on planning applications.
We
prepared a sustainable design and construction guide for the London Borough of Enfield. CAG worked with the London Borough of Enfield
over a period of four years to deliver a comprehensive package including: drafting a policy on sustainable design and construction for
revisions of their UDP; producing a design and construction guide; and training planning, building control and property services
officers. The London Borough of Enfield and CAG received a commendation for this work in the 'Planning for Sustainable Development'
section of the 2002 RPTI Planning Awards.
- We drafted A guide to sustainable design and construction in Bristol, which has now been adopted as Supplementary Planning
Guidance, and provided associated training.
- We advised Gloucestershire County Council on their policies and guidance
for sustainable design, and provided the Council with specialist advice
on achieving the sustainable design of school buildings.
- We contributed to Building-in Sustainability - a guide to sustainable construction and development in the North East, a
project led by Llewelyn-Davies
- We have provided training in sustainable design and construction for development control officers in East Devon and South
Oxfordshire.
