Training for Sustainable Development

CAG Consultants have a strong track record in delivering training which both inspires and effectively leads to improved delivery of existing policies and guidance, or increases capacity to deliver new working practices. Our approach to training is interactive and flexible. We work with organisations to find out what they need, and then to provide practical input that informs and enthuses.

We offer:

• Training and capacity building at Member, Officer, Partner and Partnership-level
• Training in sustainability appraisal, sustainable design and construction and wider sustainable development issues and tools
• Training to support policy and guidance development

Some examples of our work include:

LSP Learning Programme on Sustainable Communities

We researched and developed a learning programme on sustainable communities with the Local Government Centre at the University of Warwick. This was a joint project for the Academy for Sustainable Communities and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. The research included: mapping current capacity building on sustainable communities that is available to LSPs; investigating what capacity building techniques LSPs are using and which they think are most effective; and asking LSPs what topics they would most like to be included in a learning programme on sustainable communities. Following the research we developed proposals on how to build LSPs’ capacity to address sustainable development. Both reports are available on the Academy’s website.

IDeA Leadership Seminar on Sustainable Development

We were commissioned by the IDeA to develop a short interactive seminar on sustainable development for inclusion within the IDeA’s Local Leadership seminar series for local authority elected members. We subsequently delivered the seminar to elected members of Rotherham MBC.

South Oxfordshire

We developed, managed and delivered a training programme for sustainable development for South Oxfordshire District Council. The programme included 85% of all staff and a number of Councillors. The training was designed to provide practical tools for improving the Council’s sustainable performance. Training programme delivered in 2003 and 2004.

Training for Sustainable Design and Construction

We delivered training for Planners, Development Control Officers, developers and architects to support the development of new guides for sustainable design and construction in Tameside, Enfield and Bristol.

Training to support Sustainability Appraisal processes

We have delivered training to officers involved in sustainability appraisals in Cotswold District Council (range of officers), Leeds City Council (planning officers) and Hertfordshire County Council and also for the Devon Sustainability Group.
