Work in Wales

CAG has undertaken numerous assignments in Wales for clients including the National Assembly, the Welsh Development Agency and the Countryside Council for Wales.

Some examples of our work include:
  • Assessed the effectiveness with which the National Assembly for Wales is fulfilling its statutory duty to promote sustainable development. The CAG study will inform the review of the Assembly’s Sustainable Development Scheme and Action Plan following the election of a new Assembly in May 2003. The study investigated how effectively:
    • The Sustainable Development Scheme influenced Assembly policies.
    • Assembly policies influenced Assembly practice.
    • The Assembly is leading by example.
    • The Assembly has influenced the sustainability of others.

  • Prepared two detailed reports for the Audit Commission in Wales, dealing with notable practice in regeneration and providing a timeline of significant regeneration activity in Wales since the war. Both focused on the sustainability or otherwise of approaches taken.
  • Facilitated three stakeholder workshops to discuss the contents of the new Environment Strategy for Wales on behalf of the National Assembly for Wales.
  • Drafted a resource pack on sustainable development for Welsh local authorities (on behalf of WWF Cymru and IDeA). The pack provides resources for integrating sustainable development into Community Strategies, the Wales Programme for Improvement and the new political structures.
  • Drafted a Sustainable Regeneration policy and guidance on preparing Sustainable Regeneration Strategies for the Welsh Development Agency. These formed the core of a new Agency sustainable development and design handbook - Working Differently prepared by a consortium of consultancies including CAG, and led by Landscape Design Associates.
  • Undertook a year-long project for the Countryside Council for Wales on resource allocation, corporate planning and monitoring by the 3 Welsh National Park Authorities. This included advising on: a new formula for allocating national park grant, and building agreement on the new formula among the 3 parks; a common framework for corporate planning and performance reporting by the national parks; state of the park reporting.
  • Advised a consortium of Welsh NGOs on the draft sustainable development indicators published by the National Assembly for Wales, and presented our conclusions at a seminar in Cardiff.
